Module Description: |
Maintaining invovlement in sport and physical activity amongst teenagers is the focus of this module. Students will be exposed to a range of traditional and non traditional sports and physical activities. Students will also be accredited through Sport Ireland Coaching and the iCoach Kids MOOC upon successful completion of the module.

Identify relevant aspects of educational theory and sports pedagogy research to best practice in teaching and coaching. |
MLO2 |
Formulate an appropriate coaching plan in GAA or Soccer; Volleyball and Badminton to engage teenagers in team and individual physical activities. |
MLO3 |
Perform various paddle movements and strokes and cycle techniques to safely and successfully Canoe and Kayak and mountain bike |
MLO4 |
Participate and explain the key points behind the organisation and safe operation of wild camping. (Safety, tent pitching, cooking, cleanliness, hygiene, enjoyment). |
MLO5 |
Evaluate current research relating to teenage engagement in Sport and Physical activity. |
MLO6 |
Evaluate a sports activity event which engages teenagers in sport, and or recreational physical activity. |

Review of literature investigating why children drop out and what can be done to address it.

Instructional methods and pedagogical strategies.
The relationship between coaching and teaching. Overview of direct method, indirect method, reciprocal method, guided discovery, free exploration, problem solving method, TGFU.

Structure of class, variety, effective questioning, personal characteristics, motivational techniques, group/class management, Blooms Taxonomy, Learning outcomes etc.

Growth, development and maturation, Body composition, growth and development of tissues, physiological responses to acute exercise, Peak Height Velocity, growth impeding performance.

Long Term Player and Athlete Development / Lifelong Involvement in Sport and Physical activity.
Analysis of individual and player development pathways, good practice demonstrated in Ireland and Globally.

How to develop a child centred philosophy.

Highlight the link between feedback and learning - types provided, and how to provide effective feedback.

Exercises/games/activities for Late Childhood/Adolescence
A range of Sports and physical activities that encourage active adolescents to maintain and encourage involvement in sport and physical activity. These activities will be a combination of traditional team, and non-traditional individual activities. Students will be given the opportunity to up skill in GAA (Award 1 Youth) FAI (Kick Start 2) Volleyball (Spikeball), Badminton and Adventure actives both land based and aquatic.

Leadership
Students develop competence as group leaders through team working, critical thinking and use of problem solving skills. Effective event planning and contingency planning.

Leadership Activities
Students learn the basic skills necessary for outdoor survival, camp-craft and group leadership in the outdoor environment

In order to pass this module, students must attend and participate in the residential week which takes place in semester 2. Learning Outcome 3: Perform various paddle movements and strokes and cycle techniques to safely and successfully Canoe and Kayak and mountain bike and Learning Outcome 4: Participate and explain the key points behind the organisation and safe operation of wild camping. (Safety, tent pitching, cooking, cleanliness, hygiene, enjoyment) are assessed during this week. |
