Module Description: This module will provide students with knowledge of the principles of Sports Law based on case law and legislation and will enable students to apply these principles of law in a sporting context.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Describe the sources of Irish Law within the context of the European Union and the Irish Legal System
MLO2 Discuss civil liability in sport, with reference to governance of sport, its management, supervision and participation.
MLO3 Examine the function of Criminal Law as a regulator of the sporting function
MLO4 Explain the regulation of Performance Enhancement in Sport, both internationally and nationally

Introduction to the Irish Legal System
Distinction between civil and criminal law in Ireland. Operation of the court system in Ireland. Sources of law in Ireland.
Governance, Management and Supervision in Sport
Role of Sport Ireland. Regulation and recognition of sports.
Negligence
Negligence as it relates to sport and relevant case law.
Criminal Law in Sport
The role of criminal law in the context of sports events.
Performance Enhancement and Anti Doping Regulation
National and International Regulation. WADA, European Union, International Olympic Committee and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
