Students will study various sports development approaches using case studies and exemplars of national and International best practice.

Rationale for Sports Development.
Rationales: sociological, e.g. social inclusion, equality, combat anti-social behaviour; economic regeneration, neighbourhood renewal, sustainability, excellence in Irish sport.
Impact: improve and maintain personal health (diabetes, heart disease, mental and physical), women and sports participation, overweight, stress, eating disorders, pre and post pregnancy, pre-school children

Sports Development Strategies
The development plan. Recruiting leaders/volunteers. Providing for training needs volunteers. Target populations. Creating links with appropriate organisations/individuals. Promoting community participation - audit of current activity levels and participation incentives. Evaluation of the suitability of activities for target populations. Balance between performance and participation. Maximum use of all available facilities.

Implementing the initiatives
Student led sessions on how group will be managed, what communication tools, election of officers.
