On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO2 Interpret the specific application of child protection policies and legislation to the delivery of youth services
MLO3 Examine the application of appropriate standards in the delivery of youth work
MLO4 Analyze the statutory and other structures that apply in the protection of children's rights and when a child and young person comes into contact with the criminal justice system

The Policy Context of Youth Work
The Youth Work Act 2001. The National Youth Strategy 2015- 2020. Better Outcomes, Brighter Futures: the National Policy Framework for children and young people 2014-2020. Review of the Youth Work Act 2001.
The 'rights' of children and young persons
The legal definition of a 'child' and a 'young person'. The Constitutional position of the 'Child'. The rights of children and young persons under Irish law and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Education Welfare Act 2000.
Child Protection and the Youth Work Sector
Children First Act 2015 and it's application to youth work. Code of Good Practice for the Youth Work Sector. National Vetting Bureau (Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults) Acts 2012- 2016. Criminal Justice (Spent Convictions and Certain Disclosures) Act 2016.
The rights of children who come into contact with the justice system
The legal implications and importance of having a separate juvenile justice system as per the Children Act 2001, as amended. Court proceedings and alternative ways of dealing with children who commit crimes. The Irish Youth Justice Service, youth crime policy and law. The National Youth Justice Strategy 2015-2020.
The 'Youth Worker' and 'Professionalism'
Youth work as being educational and elective, structured and systematic. National Quality Standards Framework for Youth Work. Confidentiality, consent, accountability and protected disclosures. The Youth Worker as an advocate of the rights and interests of young people.
