Module Indicative Content
Common critical care presentations
Management of the trauma patient. Management of the shocked animal. Management of acute systemic disorders e.g. cardiac, respiratory, neurological and abdominal crises. Paediatric emergencies. Management of poisoning cases. Ophthalmic emergencies. Haematological emergencies. Anaesthesia, analgesia & sedation in emergency patients.
Appraisal of the critically ill animal.
Triage and assessment of the emergency patient. Role of the VN in assisting with investigation of the emergency patient. Monitoring of the critically ill animal.
CPCR: current practice
RECOVER CPR online training. Identification of common cardiac arryhthmias. Post-resuscitation care and monitoring.
Emergency nursing skills: Indicative practical content
Establishment & maintenance of a crash cart and ICU stock control: drugs, consumables, equipment. Assessment & monitoring of acute patients. Drug calculations and delivery e.g. CRI, aerosolisation. Central venous catheterisation; saphenous catheterisation & cutdown technique. Administration & monitoring of hypertonic infusions. Blood component therapy: processing, storage & administration. Emergency decontamination: dermal, ocular & gastric. CPCR & closed-loop communication (following completion of RECOVER online training). Supplemental oxygen delivery; mechanical ventilation; airway maintenance & monitoring of endotracheal & tracheostomy tubes. Acute management of effusions: pericardiocentesis, thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis; management of chest & abdominal drains.
