Module Indicative Content
Principles of shelter medicine and population health.
Overview of shelter medicine. Management of free-roaming populations. Design and management of neutering programmes.
Principles of biosecurity and disease control in shelter environments.
Shelter design. Principles of infectious disease control. Preventative medicine in shelters. Control of common infectious disease presentations, for example respiratory disease, gastrointestinal disease, skin disease.
Principles of optimal behaviour and welfare in shelter animals
Ethics and animal welfare. Stress management in the shelter environment. Risk factors for and management of problem behaviours in shelter animals.
Team work in shelter medicine
Identification of and engagement with relevant stakeholders. Working with the animal charity sector and relevant government agencies. Support for owners of rehomed shelter animals.
Site visit
Visit to an animal shelter or similar suitable site
