Module Description: The subject explores a number of issues that explain what tourism is, how it works
and what internal and external factors influence successful tourism and heritage operations. The
subject adopts a multi-disciplinary perspective that allows students to examine the
meaning of tourism and heritage to the individual, the structure of tourism and its component elements and the management of tourism from the perspective of the market place.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Critically analyse the key concepts that have driven the development of our understanding of tourism and heritage as an academic field of study.
MLO2 Apply theories of tourism to test their validity in contemporary tourism and heritage contexts. They will be able to critically review published material and other tourism and heritage-related research;
MLO3 Develop a deep understanding of the critical theories that drive tourism studies required to undertake further study and explore a number of issues that explains what tourism is, how it works and what internal and external factors influence successful tourism operations.
MLO4 Apply theories of tourism by adopting a multi-disciplinary perspective that allows them to identify the factors that determine the nature of the tourism and heritage industry and its success.
MLO5 Examine the meaning of tourism to the individual, the structure of tourism and heritage and its component elements and the management of tourism from the perspective of the marketplace.
MLO6 Analyze different perspectives and ideas about tourism and apply their creative thinking and analysis skills to tourism and heritage sector issues and problems.

to appreciate that tourism is not absolute to understand and evaluate the contributions that different disciplines make to tourism to evaluate whether tourism is a discipline or a field of study
What is tourism and the differences between tourism and heritage?
to review the historical evolution of the concepts of leisure and recreation to examine how and where tourism fits into the leisure paradigm to identify the similarities and differences between tourism, heritage, leisure and recreation to define tourism
The Structure of Tourism: Attractions and Demand Generators
Introduce various models to explain the structure of tourism Understand the role that demand generators / attractions play in the development, positioning and marketing of tourism products, organizations and destinations Describe and define the various types of attractions/heritage attractions Understand ways of developing demand generators
Access and the Spatial Interactions of Tourists
examine the impacts of physical access on tourist flows discuss itinerary models examine the effect that market access has on the development of tourist facilities assess the management implications of strong or poor physical access

Select ONE issue and review the most current papers on this topic (at least 15 papers, more if possible).
Discuss the themes of these papers
Identify which type of theory/theories identified by Smith, Xiao, Nunkoo, & Tukamushaba (2013) are used to examine these issues,
If possible, compare to practice with theory, and
Discuss whether the research is theoretically robust.
