Module Description: Supervised work placement is an integral component of the BSc (Hons) programme in Nutrition and Health.
The aim of this full time thirteen week placement is to give students the opportunity to experience the principles and practices employed in a key nutrition / health setting including, but not limited to, clinical setting, sports settings, food companies, nutrition product developers / producers, with nutritionists, health promotion units, food research centres and primary/ secondary schools. Students will have the option to complete their placement internationally, as appropriate / available. Emphasis will be placed on developing the students' key transferable skills, while experiencing the environment of a 'real' work place, with the overall aim of improving their general employability post graduation.

Module Indicative Content
Occupational First Aid (FAR)
First aid in the workplace. Patient assessment. Respiratory emergencies. Cardiac first response. Wounds and bleeding. Altered levels of consciousness. Musculoskeletal injuries. Burns and scalds, chemicals and electric shock. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in First Aid Responder training. This will be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.
Manual Handling
Current legislation and its implications for the employer and employee. The anatomy of the spine. An introduction to biomechanics and ergonomics. How injuries occur. conducting a risk assessment. The principles of handling inanimate and animate objects. Lifting to and from the ground. Lifting to and from a height. Pushing and pulling loads. Use of hoists and manual handling equipment. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in Manual Handling. This will be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.
Preparation
Work placement preparation: Students will meet with placement office and lecturing team to emphasise preparation required for placement (required paperwork, preparation, conduct etc.)
Placement
Work Placement Protocol: A placement co-ordinator will be responsible for assisting students in acquiring suitable work placements (areas and responsibilities may differ from site to site). Students will be visited by a member of academic staff during the placement. The employer must provide a work supervisor’s report to the placement co-ordinator at the end of the placement period, demonstrating that the student has satisfactorily completed the work placement. Students should show competency in the following areas: Attendance; Technical skills; Punctuality; Initiative; Co-operation with employer; Level of interest; Co-operation with co-workers; Compliance with health and safety standards; Communication skills; Overall quality of work.

Assessment Description
The onsite work placement supervisor will complete a performance evaluation of the student/ students under his/ her supervision. This assessment will be marked on a pass/ fail basis by the work placement supervisor (P/F). Upon securing a pass in this evaluation, students will be required to submit a written report of their experiences whilst on placement, demonstrating how learning outcomes set by the student, host organisation and Institute were met. This work will be graded by the Institute Lecturer (75%).

Assessment Description
Students will be required to submit a portfolio containing the following documentation: CV, Placement Profile, Code of Conduct, Learning Contract, Induction Checklist, Mid-Placement Progress Report, Hours Record, Diary of Activities, Garda Clearance and any other additional documentation requirements issued by the host organisation.
