Educational Aim of Programme The aim of this programme is to facilitate nurses to increase their existing knowledge, skills, and attitudes in leadership, management and quality initiatives in Intellectual Disability Services. It is envisaged that this will contribute to graduates’ competence in enhancing service delivery for people with an intellectual disability.

Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

On successful completion of this programme the learner should be able to :

PLO1 The graduate should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the theory, concepts and methods pertaining to leadership management and quality initiatives in intellectual disability services.
PLO2 The graduate should know and demonstrate a critically analysis and evaluate relevant knowledge in relation to leadership,management and quality initiatives in intellectual disability services
PLO3 The graduate should be able to demonstrate evidence based skills essential for leadership, management and quality initiatives in intellectual disability services at a generalist level; plan and initiate care within agreed interdisciplinary protocols to achieve person centered outcomes and evaluate their effectiveness
PLO4 The graduate should be able to identify and meet the needs of the person with an intellectual disability within a health setting: act as an effective member of the health care team; participate in a multidisciplinary team approach to care; evaluate practice and use current research findings to underpin leadership, management and quality initiatives in intellectual disability.
PLO5 The graduate should be able to adopt an holistic approach to the care of a person with an intellectual disability; plan care, taking into consideration the therapeutic regimes of all members of the healthcare team; implement planned care/interventions to achieve identified outcomes; evaluate progress towards expected outcomes and review care plans in accordance with evaluation data and in consultation with the person with and intellectual disability; establish and maintain therapeutic interpersonal relationships; identify disseminate and intergrade knowledge in relation to the management of a person with an intellectual disability.
PLO6 The graduate should be able to effectively support and manage the use of leadership, management and quality initiatives in intellectual disability services and in accordance with their role; demonstrate the ability to work as a team member; determine priorities for care based on need, acuity and optimal time for intervention; facilitate the coordination of care; ensure that care is appropriate, effective and consistent; provide leadership and act as a role model in leadership, management and quality initiatives in intellectual disability within contemporary health care practice.
PLO7 The graduate should be able to take responsibility for personal and professional development; act to enhance the personal and professional development of self and others; demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning; contribute to the learning experiences of colleagues through support, supervision and teaching.
PLO8 The graduate should be able to provide and articulate professional and ethical practice, demonstrate a sound underpinning of theoretical knowledge that informs practice and is informed by practice; practice within the limits of own competence and take measures to develop own competence; use specialist knowledge to support the application of leadership, management and quality initiatives in intellectual disability services within the health care setting.
