Module Description: This module aims to further develop learners’ English language proficiency at approximately level B1+ to B2- on the CERFL. Learners will practice the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), as well as the three systems (vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation). There is a particular focus this semester on grammar building, and a continued focus on developing effective strategies for language learning.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Listen to spoken academic discourse (such as lectures and presentations) at level B1+ to B2- and demonstrate comprehension by identifying gist, detail, and opinion.
MLO2 Make a presentation on a topic related to their studies, using the language of presentations and demonstrating oral fluency at level approximately B1+ to B2-.
MLO3 Read texts on academic topics at level B1+ to B2-, and demonstrate comprehension by, for example, identifying detail, interpreting opinion and inference.
MLO4 Write a short academic text, such as an essay or report, adhering to academic writing conventions, and demonstrating accuracy in grammar and lexis at level B1+ to B2-.
MLO5 Employ effective language learning strategies in relation to grammar, e.g., self-selecting grammar points for investigation, and keeping a record of grammar points researched.

Module Indicative Content
Listening
Listening comprehension practice at approximately B1+ to B2- level, to include lecture-style audio. Authentic listening skills practice. Critical thinking in listening practice.
Speaking
Giving an academic presentation, using the functional language of presentations. Pronunciation in context. Making the sounds of key words, placing emphasis on syllables, and intonation. Handling questions from the audience post-presentation.
Reading
Academic reading at B1+ to B2- level, for example, using authentic texts, articles, emails, model essays and model answers. Intensive reading for comprehension and vocabulary/grammar building.
Writing
Writing a short academic text, e.g., a short essay or paper. Using conventional layout. Organising ideas into well-formed paragraphs with topic/supporting/close sentences. Using basic cohesive devices. Supporting your points with basic references to reading (citations). Using some functional language for academic writing. Self-correcting writing errors. Interpreting error codes.
Vocabulary
Language of presentations: Key phrases for introducing oneself and the topic; stating purpose; providing structure; signposting; inviting questions; dealing with difficulties. Vocabulary for academic writing, e.g., essays or reports. Vocabulary in context.
Grammar
Focusing on the form and usage of grammar points that students have self-selected (see grammar project above). At this level, these may typically include perfect forms, phrasal verbs, relative clauses (which/that), and modals.
Strategy Training
Developing self-awareness of one's own grammar use. Self-selecting grammar for development. Investigating a selected grammar point. Interpreting error codes and self-correcting errors.
