Module Description: While effective communication skills are a core graduate attribute across all discipline areas, feedback from the business and financial sectors in particular indicates that these skills are particularly important. This module provides students with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of effective communication, as well as practical training in presentation skills, time management and basic negotiation.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Recognise and translate non-verbal communication ‘cues’ from others, particularly in the workplace.
MLO2 Deliberately encode effective messages, taking into account cultural considerations and receiver sensitivities within the finance sector.
MLO3 Develop and deliver effective presentations.
MLO4 Work more effectively in teams, understanding your own communication style, and practicing listening and assertiveness skills.
MLO5 Appreciate the importance of time management and develop a personal system for managing your time.
MLO6 Develop basic negotiation skills.

Introduction to Communication
Key elements of the communication process (sender, receiver, etc), managing your messages, interpersonal communication, barriers to effective communication.
Non-Verbal Communication
Importance of non-verbal communication, body language, posture, gestures, etc, proxemics, kinesics, semiotics.
Presentation Skills
Preparing an effective presentation for different scenarios; understanding your audience; developing relevant content; choosing appropriate visual aids; building confidence in delivery; dealing with presentation anxiety.
Working Effectively in a Team
Working in Groups for Assignments; Teams in the Workplace; Effectively Participating in Meetings (understanding roles, agendas, motivations); Listening Skills, Assertiveness, Understanding your personal communication style.
Time Management
Time as an irreplaceable resource; understanding your habitual use of time; principles for effective time management; time management for assignments; time management for the workplace.
Negotiation Skills
Definitions, Key Concepts, Myths, Terms, Basic Negotiating Skills

Individual Presentation. Assessment tools designed by the lecturer will be directly aligned with a selection of module learning outcomes. An indicative continuous assessment assignment could require students to prepare and deliver individual and/or group presentations (depending on class size).
