Module summary
This module is a thematic exploration of Ireland under the Union with Great Britain from 1800 to 1914. It encourages students to analyse change in Irish politics, society, economy and culture and relate those changes to the Union. Although the Union is usually seen as a failure the module will seek to interpret changes in Ireland in this period in terms of success as well as failure.
Lecture content will include
• The Passing of the Act of Union • The Catholic Question. • Repeal and ‘Justice for Ireland’. • Orangeism and the Union. • Young Ireland. • Irish poverty and the British State. • The land question and Irish backwardness. • Belfast and a different Ireland. • The Republican challenge to the Union. • Gladstone and the Irish question. • Parnellism and the Irish Party at Westminster. • Cultural nationalism and Irish Catholicism. • Ulster Unionism and Irish Protestantism. • Home Rule and partition.
