On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Distinguish the main forces, people and events in shaping 20th century Irish history.
MLO2 Debate in a reasoned and well-informed historical discourse about the relationship between social, economic, political and cultural change and the meaning of tradition and modernity in 20th century Ireland.
MLO3 Analyse the dynamic of traditional and modern values within independent Ireland and Northern Ireland.
MLO4 Assess the consequences of changes in ideas about tradition and modernity on Irish men, women and children.
MLO5 Appraise the dominant concepts of cultural identity and relate these to concepts of tradition and modernity in Ireland.

Module summary
Concepts of tradition and of modernity have been a powerful influence on the course of Irish history in the 20th century. This module will use these concepts to explore the course of recent Irish history and to assess their impact on the lives of the men, women and children of Ireland, north and south.
Module content will include
• The Irish revolution. • Making an “Irish” Ireland. • Land and Industry. • Northern Ireland and the British State 1920-39. • The experience of world war. • The crisis of tradition in independent Ireland in the 1950s • Northern Ireland and the British State 1945-63. • Modernising Ireland: Lemass and O’Neill compared. • The 1960s and the modernisation of Ireland. • Religion and the resurgence of tradition. • Debates in the south: marriage, sex, women. • Debates in the north: identity, politics, war. • Being European.
