Module Indicative Content
Module Summary
This module explores the discipline of historiography and acts as an introduction to the study of history at third level. Students will be introduced to a range of historical writers representative of each era of human history and are encouraged to use them to engage critically with key concepts of historical thought and analysis.
Lectures may include
• History in the ancient and classical world. • History in early medieval pagan and Christian Europe. • History in the high medieval period. • Other traditions: history in Asia and in the Islamic world. • Renaissance Europe and history. • History in the Enlightenment. • Revolutionary and Conservative Histories. • National Histories. • New History: economic and social questions. • Total history and micro-histories. • History of Gender.
