Module Description: The aim of this module is equip students with the theoretical and analytical tools to examine state boundaries and borders as institutions, and as territorial regions of contention, transition and connection. The specific case study is the Ireland/UK land boundary.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Geo-political context, ethnocentric state development, the failure of territorial solutions
Borders as hybrid spaces, migration and interface
Evaluate the notion of borders as bridges, spaces of liminality, migration and refuge
Europe's shifting boundaries
The external and internal boundaries of the EU: customs unions and single markets
Boundaries as barriers
The continuing and growing salience of boundaries as barriers
