Module summary
Concepts of revolution and counter-revolution are used as an analytic tool to explore the historical period 1912-1932 in Ireland, utilising the rich resources now available online. The module will also engage critically in the process of remembering and commemorating the anniversaries of this key period in Ireland, north and south.
Module content will include
• The Home Rule debate • Labour in Ireland and Larkinism. • The Irish Feminist movements. • The cultural debate. • Mobilising Ulster Resistance. • The impact of World War 1. • The impact of 1916. • Dáil Éireann as a revolutionary/counter-revolutionary State. • The IRA as a revolutionary/counter-revolutionary army. • The Churches, revolution and counter-revolution. • Labour militancy, south and north. • Partition • Civil War. • The Counter-revolutionary State, North and South. • Commemorating and interpreting the revolution.
