Module Description: Students will study various contemporary issues relating to sports and physycal activity in Ireland and globally.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Discuss how social class and class relations influence sports and sport participation, and national identity.
MLO2 Assess the importance of social theories in their application to sport.
MLO3 Compare and contrast the role of the media in organised sports.
MLO4 Distinguish the complex issues relating to deviant behaviour in sports, and propose possible solutions to these issues.
MLO5 Discuss the importance that sport plays to the national and international economy
MLO6 Critically appraise the role that politics play in the organisation of national and international sports.

Discussion on types of sports that the population of Ireland are engaged in.
Social Theories
Contrast Liberal, Marxist, Feminist and Post-Modernist theories of sport
The Media
The role that the media plays in coverage, governance and possible organisation of sport.
Deviance in Sport
An analysis of Drug use in sport. Critical appraisal of the evolution of on the field violence and off the field violence.
Sport and the Economy
The role that sport plays in the Irish Economy.
Sport and National Identity
Sport, Nationalism, Globalisation. An investigation of Irish and global examples.
Ethics in Sport
Can we have sport and fair play?
