This module critically evaluates the nature and role of effective leadership in a veterinary practice. Students will critically examine the role of the veterinary nurse as a leader in their current and future positions in a practice and facilitate them in developing knowledge, mindsets and skills in leadership.

MLO1 |
Differentiate between leadership and management, and the role and importance of both in the context of a veterinary practice. |
MLO2 |
Critically evaluate the knowledge, skills and practices of traditional and contemporary leadership styles. |
MLO3 |
Identify the personal strengths, qualities and mindsets required to ensure effective leadership at all levels within a veterinary practice |
MLO4 |
Analyse how organisational structure, group processes and individual differences impact on effective leadership in a veterinary practice. |
MLO5 |
Reflect upon and evaluate their own personal leadership style. |

Theoretical perspectives on leadership and management
Examine the nature and concepts of leadership and management with a particular focus on their application in a veterinary practice.

Characteristics and factors that contribute to effective leadership
Examine the characteristics and factors that contribute to effective leadership at different levels and for different roles in a veterinary practice e.g. attributes, behaviours, skills, ability to reflect upon and evaluate personal and team motives and /beliefs.

Personal strengths, qualities and mindsets of leaders
Examine leadership behaviours in the context of a veterinary practice; Assessing the leader’s fundamental capabilities, signature strengths and mindsets; how the leader’s vision and values affect their effectiveness; evaluating and refining emotional intelligence ; using influence behaviours to motivate individuals and teams. Mentoring as a leadership tool.

Building and maintaining a team
Assessing the culture in a practice; organisational structure and leadership; building and maintaining a team; creating a focus on shared goals; motivation; conflict management; negotiation; holding difficult and challenging conversations; creating a culture of respect and trust in which the importance of valuing and respecting each person’s experience and opinion is observed.
