This module aims to introduce students to the core theories and concepts of Leadership and People Management. Students will learn about effective leadership and people management strategies and how to apply these within the field of social care, thus developing and enhancing their own leadership style.

Analyse different leadership theories and practices relevant to the social care sector and own organisation. |

Critically analyse the role of people management in reaching organisational goals, and encouraging innovation and change. |

Justify leadership competencies and actions. |

Critically assess own skills and development needs as a leader in the social care sector. |

Leadership Theories
Understanding Different Leadership Perspectives: Servant Leadership, Trait approach, Behavioural approach, Situational approach, Relational approach, Distributed leadership, Authentic Leadership, Ethical Leadership, Critical Leadership, Systems Leadership, Innovative Leadership. Trauma Informed Leadership.

Role of the Leader
The role of the leader in a social care setting. Organisational vision, values and purpose. Organisational Culture. The leaders role in creativity, innovation and change management. Influencing and negotiation.

Leadership vs Management
Differences between leadership and management. Choice of style.
How and why leadership and management styles and skills may need to be adapted to address different situations.

People Management
Recruitment and selection. Performance management and dealing with underperformance. Conflict management. Reward strategies. Health & well-being: recognising signs of burnout and the effect on individual, team and service users. Techniques to overcome.

Leading the Team
Building and leading effective teams. Understanding motivation. Team working, team selection, formation, roles and benefits.
Promoting resilience and strategies for maintaining well-being. Fostering a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion. Managing and working with a diverse and multidisciplinary team with social care principles. Managing diverse personalities.

Leader as a coach
Coaching, listening skills and emotional intelligence. Positive psychology and strengths based approach to leadership and management. Practical coaching session.

Self-Leadership
Developing self-awareness of own leadership style, leadership characteristics, strengths and development areas. Diagnostics to help self-awareness. Developing as a reflective leader. Reflective practice, journaling. Continuous Professional Development. Seeking and responding to feedback. Long and short term career planning. Personal values, ethics, resilience and self-care.
