On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO2 Write a research proposal and literature review, adhering to academic conventions.
MLO3 Consider key points in spoken academic discourse at C2 level, in particular in discussions of research methods and research projects.
MLO4 Use a broad range of advanced (C2) lexis and grammar in their spoken and written English, on academic and general topics.
MLO5 Participate effectively in an academic reading seminar.
MLO6 Demonstrate an understanding of the role of social construction in their own language development.

Academic reading. Reading critically. Reading intensively at C2 level. Reading research proposals and literature reviews.
Writing
Writing a research proposal. Writing research questions. Describing research methods. Writing a lit review. Paraphrasing. Synopsis and synthesis. Advanced techniques for referencing and avoiding plagiarism.
Listening
Academic listening at C2 level. Listening to discussions of seminal works. Understanding key concepts. Listening to academic argument.
Use of English
Advanced-level (C1) lexis, grammar and usage.
Speaking
Seminar Skills: participating in a shared reading seminar; giving a spoken summary of a text; discussing key points in a text; raising questions; giving your understanding; expressing agreement or disagreement; asking for clarification.
Vocabulary
Functional language for participating in a reading seminar. Academic vocabulary for discussing research and study aims; describing research methods; describing problems and situations; presenting an argument; talking about meaning; points of view; degrees of certainty.
Grammar
Relative clauses and other types of clause. Pronouns, substitution and leaving-out words. Advanced adjectives and adverbs.
Strategy Training
Recognising the role of social construction in language development.
