Module Description: The purpose of the module is to provide the student with a knowledge of techniques used in the procurement and management of projects.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Explain the role of project management and the duties of a project manager in a typical construction project.
MLO2 Illustrate the life cycle of a construction project and what the key factors are for consideration by the client and project manager at each stage including technical, functional, legal, financial and programmatic.
MLO3 Appraise the importance of developing appropriate project strategies and what the key issues are for consideration in developing such strategies.
MLO4 Discuss the relevance of quality in the delivery of projects and contrast between the various techniques available in the management of quality.

Principles of Project Management
Importance of project management, objectives of PM, project stages, qualities of a PM, main processes of project management.
Project Procurement & Contracts
Project procurement strategy, different procurement structures, Traditional form of procurement, design and build, construction management, management contracting. Choosing the correct strategy.
Project Planning techniques and reviewing
Requirement of project plans. Ghantt charts, linked ghantt charts, network analysis - activity on the arrow, precedence diagrams. Critical path analysis, float calculation. Planning reviews, resource levelling and resource smoothing techniques. MS project.
Cost Control
Purpose of cost control, monitoring, cost control techniques, PERT, variances.
Quality Management
Quality management and quality control systems, inspection, quality control, quality assurance, total quality management (TQM).
