Module Description: This module is concerned with examining the relevant theories and practices associated with effective leadership and innovation. The emphasis throughout is upon how we might more effectively address the challenge of creating and sustaining competitiveness in hospitality and events organisations through the mechanisms of both leadership and innovation.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Critically appraise the main theories associated with leadership and their potential impacts within the context of hospitality and events organisations.
MLO2 Critique the role of innovation within the context of hospitality and events organisations.
MLO3 Critically appraise the new product development process and its application within thehospitality and events industries.
MLO4 Critically assess the importance of effective (a) leadership and (b) innovation upon the performance of hospitality and events organisations.
MLO5 Develop a concept/idea demonstrating creativity and innovation/entrepreneurship to improve a hospitality/event organisation

Module Indicative Content
The big picture/leadership; Theoretical perspectives on leadership and management. Theories and models of innovation.
Develop a critical understanding of these theories and approaches to leadership and innovation, with a particular focus on their application within the context of the tourism, hospitality and events industries.
Organisation and culture; Understanding organisation, change and culture.
Emphasis will be upon developing an appreciation of the basis of dynamic, effective leadership. Leaderships role in creating and sustaining competitiveness through an organisation's capacity to engage in successful innovation.
People and organisations, Leading people and organisations. Individual and organisational learning and development.
The major emphasis will be upon students developing a sound grasp and understanding of how organisations might most effectively deploy the activities associated with innovation and to harness their full potential for improving performance within the context of tourism, hospitality and events-focused organisations

Students will each undertake a study of a leader within the hospitality / event industry by conducting an in-depth interview to identify their perspectives on leadership and innovation and how they apply them within their roles. They will then present their results /findings.
