The aim of this module is to give the student an understanding of the logistics function and how competitive advantage can be gained through the use of an efficient integrated international transport system, which has been tailored to meet the needs of the Global Supply Chain.

Analyse the mission and scope of Logistics and how it fits into the corporate strategy of an Agri-Food business. |
MLO2 |
Evaluate the different elements in the role of international transport management, including IT. |
MLO3 |
Assess the appropriate modes of transport, or service provider, for any product dispatch within the Agri-Food Industry. |
MLO4 |
Evaluate the appropriate payment terms for any international transaction and be aware of all regulations and appropriate information technology. |

Learning and Teaching methods
This subject will be taught through blended learning. This may be supplemented with site visits and guest lectures as appropriate.The web is a rich source of video material. Examples and case studies of World Class Companies like Dell, DHL, and Ryan Air and M & S Plan A will be used.

Logistics defined within its place in Global Supply Chain Management and how logistics strategy fits into a sustainable corporate strategy of an Agri-Food business. GS1. Lean Manufacturing

International transport.
Defined and the essential features of an efficient and sustainable transportation system explored together with the associated documentation.

Modes of transport.
Road, rail, air, water, pipeline, and wire. Their advantages, disadvantages and costs and relative impact on the environment.

Construction of road vehicles.
Construction of road vehicles for efficient operation of a transportation system which minimises the impact on the environment.

Inter-modal transport systems.
Factors to be considered when choosing and integrating the elements of the mode and inter-modal transport system.

European Union regulations.
Drivers hrs and digital Tacho. The different CPC required. Transportation of dangerous substances.

International movement of goods.
International movement of goods and the Incoterms and letters of credit. International ethics

Information Technology in SCM transport.
Automatic tracking control of vehicles,loads and assets. Track and trace information, bar-coding, mobile computing and radio frequency technology.

Logistics in a European and Global context.
Case studies of some of the Irish Agri-Food businesses selling their products in a European and Global basis.
