Module Description: The aim of this module is to provide the learner with an understanding of health and safety management systems and their role within such a system in a manufacturing environment.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO3 Describe how a health and safety management system is audited to monitor it's performance.
MLO4 Describe the elements of emergency planning.

MLO6 Describe the ways in which the health and safety system can be monitored on a daily basis.

Health and Safety Management System
The health and safety work organisation and policy in a company, the planning process for accident and ill health prevention, the line management responsibilities and the practices, procedures and resources for developing and implementing, reviewing and maintaining the occupational safety and health policy.
The Health and Safety Policy
It is a statement by the organisation of it’s intentions and approach in relation to it’s overall safety and health performance and provides a framework for action, and for the setting of its safety and health objectives and targets.
The control of contractors in the workplace.
The procedures required to protect the health and safety of contractors on site.
The communication and consultation processes in health and safety.
The various ways in which health and safety is communicated in the workplace including safety reps, safety teams, Key Performance Indicators KPIs.
Risk assessments and method statements.
The different risk assessment methodology and the responsibilities in relation to method statements.
Permit to Work.
Suitability, training and monitoring of permit to work in the manufacturing environment.
Emergency Planning
The development, testing and training on emergency planning.
The monitoring of the health and safety management system.
Active and reactive systems that are required for monitoring.
Near Miss, Accident and Incident.
How they are defined the requirements on investigating and reporting.
Behavioural Based Safety Guide.
A bottom-up approach, with top-down support from safety leaders.
